A high-level delegation from Greece’s National and Kapodistrian University of Athens arrives in Cyprus today to finalise plans for establishing the institution’s first overseas campus in Nicosia, philenews sources close to the matter said.

The delegation, led by the university’s rector, will meet with Cyprus’s president, the Archbishop of Cyprus, and Nicosia’s mayor during their two-day visit, following recent legislative changes in Greece allowing the university to operate foreign branches.

The university plans to open medical and nursing schools in Nicosia’s city centre, with a possible addition of a business administration department, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The campus will be housed in the Ledras Street’s Tarsi Arcade, in buildings owned by the Archbishopric and Nicosia municipality.

“The groundwork has been laid through extensive meetings and preparations”, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos told philenews.

The mayor has been instrumental in securing the locations and facilitating negotiations with the university.

The institution is also considering expanding to other Cyprus cities and adding psychology and philosophy programmes, the sources said.

The development follows Greece’s recent approval of legislation permitting state universities to establish overseas branches, marking a significant expansion of Greek higher education beyond its borders.

The delegation’s visit suggests final agreements are imminent, with technical staff included to assess facility requirements for the new campus.
