President Christodoulides on Monday confirmed that the UN requested for the construction work in Pyla to pause following tension with the Turkish Cypriot side.
In statements to reporters, Christodoulides stated, “We are closely observing the issue, staying in direct contact with the United Nations, and will issue pertinent statements accordingly.” He confirmed the request for a brief pause in the construction work and assurances for the situation’s restoration.
Addressing the broader context of challenges to the status of Pyla and other sections within the 184 km long buffer zone by Turkish occupying forces, the President stressed the Greek Cypriot proposal for consensus, insisting on the implementation of known parameters recognised by the United Nations. He firmly stated, “Any deviation from these principles is unacceptable to the Republic of Cyprus.”
Responding to inquiries about the potential resumption of activities in the area, Christodoulides conveyed that the United Nations had indicated a possible agreement for work to recommence tomorrow as mutually decided. He highlighted the monitoring of these developments by the UN Security Council.
Regarding communication with the UN Secretary-General, the President mentioned no scheduled telephone discussions. He referenced the Turkish Cypriot leader’s statement about dialogue with the Secretary-General and expressed hope that any discussion involved approval from Ersin Tatar, in consultation with Turkey, regarding the appointment of an envoy for the Cyprus issue.
Christodoulides noted the UN’s continued efforts on the matter despite initial opposition from the Turkish side.
He expressed hope that the incident that took place earlier at Pyla between the UN and the Turkish occupying forces on a piece of plot they claim as theirs, will not lead to tension.
According to an understanding that has been reached for Pyla, a single urban development area will be created, which will ensure the harmonious coexistence of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the area and, will include, among other things, a large area of residential development, the paving of a road leading towards Troulloi village, the creation of photovoltaic parks and the expansion of the urban use area of the village.
