Work on a construction project in Pyla has come to a standstill following intense protests by Turkish Cypriots, who claim their properties are being affected, in the wake of a recent agreement reached.
Tensions and verbal altercations reportedly escalated among the workers and the personnel of UNFICYP (United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus).
Simos Mytides, the community leader of Pyla, stated to Philenews shortly after noon that the work was halted based on UNFICYP’s directives.
“The work has stopped until certain issues related to the disagreement of Turkish Cypriot landowners are clarified. They believe that we have encroached on their plots,” Mytides remarked.
When asked if there were any confrontations, he stated that he was not aware of any such incidents.
He further mentioned that a decision on the way forward would be made either later in the afternoon or tomorrow morning.
