A team of U.S. specialists is visiting Cyprus this week as part of the country’s bid to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia said in a statement.
The delegation will assess Cyprus’s security procedures and operational standards, a key step in the evaluation process for VWP eligibility, according to the embassy.
The VWP is described by the embassy as “a security partnership that makes America safer, stronger, and more prosperous by facilitating legitimate travel to the United States.” Participation in the programme, the statement added, brings concrete benefits for enhancing economic and trade ties while also supporting international travel security.
The programme allows eligible citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa.
