Tychikos can be defrocked for Holy Synod insubordination, church affairs analysts say

The former Paphos Metropolitan Tychikos might quite likely be voted out of the church, said Philenews sources, if he continues reaction tactics against the Holy Synod decision to demote him to bishop following allegations that his theological approach was not in line with the Greek Orthodox faith and that he was being misguided by a sect.

Tychikos has repeatedly being sending letters to Archbishop Georgios detailing alleged ‘injustices’, as he says and his refusal to conform to the Synod decision before a final decision is made by the Constantinople Patriarchy, set to meet next week to discuss the case.

As church insiders note, the Archbishop’s patience is running thin with the language and insubordination of the reprimanded bishop and particularly his refusal to accept him as locus tenens of the Paphos Bishopric, until such time a successor is elected.

Meanwhile, Tychikos was allowed to officiate in a memorial for his mother, held today in his home community of Mesana, Paphos, following special permission by Archbishop Georgios.

His lawyer Evangelia Poulla reiterated that the people of Paphos continue to fully back their former Metropolitan, indicating that he only way someone can be defrocked, is a sexual crime, inadequacy to perform duties or mental incapacitation. ‘None of these are relevant here’, she said.

The head of the Church of Cyprus wrote to Tychikos, accusing him of using his mother’s memorial for PR reasons, instead of honouring her, as he should.

He further added that the Holy Synod would not be responding to anymore of the Tychikos ‘manipulative’ letters, until his appeal was examined by the Patriarchy Synod.
