Polis Chrysochous mayor and the community leader of Kato Pyrgos Tillyrias have urged President Nikos Christodoulides to prioritise opening a new crossing point at Kokkina during upcoming talks with Turkish Cypriots on January 20.
The local leaders sent a joint memorandum today, describing the proposed crossing as “vital” for their isolated regions, which have remained cut off from the rest of Cyprus since 1963.
“This is a unique and final opportunity that must be seized”, Yiotis Papachristofi and Nikos Kleanthous wrote in their joint statement, calling for the Kokkina crossing to be a “red line” in negotiations about new checkpoints between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
The leaders argued that opening the crossing would end decades of isolation and boost economic development in the Polis Chrysochous and Tillyria regions.
They expressed hope that President Christodoulides would recognise its strategic importance in the upcoming bicommunal talks.
