Mario Gabriel, a 17-year-old from Romania, died this morning at a private hospital in Limassol, where he had been receiving treatment following a serious road collision on August 2, 2026. He died on his birthday.

According to police, the collision occurred at around 1am on Sunday, August 2, on Limassol’s coastal road, at its junction with Anexartisias Street.

Limassol Traffic Police head Marios Charalambous said the 17-year-old was riding his motorcycle on the coastal road when, under circumstances still being investigated, he collided with a taxi that was travelling south on Anexartisias Street and turning west onto the coastal road.

The 17-year-old suffered a serious head injury in the collision and was taken to hospital, where he remained until this morning, when he died from his injuries.

According to our website’s information, police investigators have obtained CCTV footage showing the motorcycle’s path before the collision. Preliminary examination of the footage by traffic investigators appears to show the 17-year-old ran a red light, a detail being assessed as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The taxi driver underwent an alcohol test the same day, which returned a negative result.

“Police have been carrying out examinations since the same day,” Charalambous said, adding that some testimony gathered so far appears to indicate the motorcycle rider had run the red light.

Asked whether the 17-year-old was wearing a helmet, Charalambous said he was not wearing one at the time of the collision.
