The Cyprus Primary Education Teachers’ Union (POED) has raised concerns over delayed salary payments for contract teachers working in all-day optional schools and during regular morning hours.
POED described the delay in paying September and October salaries as “unacceptable”, urging relevant ministries to address the issue promptly.
The union emphasised that this is not an isolated incident, as similar delays have affected both contract teachers and some permanent teachers on probation in the past.
“The right to timely salary payment is self-evident, and no excuse for late payment can be accepted”, POED stated.
The union highlighted that many affected teachers have experienced this situation for the second or third consecutive year, pointing to “gaps, errors, and omissions” in the payment process by the responsible services of both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance.
POED rejected the explanations provided by authorities as “contradictory and unacceptable”.
The union also noted issues beyond delayed payments, including errors in deducting gratuity from contract teachers who have since become permanent staff on probation or with indefinite contracts.
