Strong winds lashing Cyprus yesterday caused damage across the island, including bringing down the giant potato sculpture that marks the entrance to the village of Xylophagou.
The landmark collapsed under the force of the powerful winds battering the area.
The Big Potato is a fibreglass statue that has stood at the entrance to Xylophagou since 2021.
The 4.9-metre sculpture, modelled on the elongated Spunta potato variety grown in the surrounding Kokkinochoria villages, was toppled by the powerful winds battering the area.
Erected ahead of the village’s annual Potato Festival, the statue was built to celebrate Xylofagou’s centuries-old potato-growing heritage and draw tourists to the area.
