The Cyprus Single Parent Families Association has called on police and broadcasting authorities to investigate allegedly criminal sexist comments made by a former footballer during a television program.
In a statement, the association said the remarks constitute criminal offenses implicating not only the ex-footballer but also the TV station and journalist involved.
“When you tolerate and broadcast such sexist speech, you cannot be free of responsibility”, the group said.
The association strongly condemned the comments that targeted divorced women, saying “divorced women are not prostitutes as he believes, and they have not lost their way”.
The group added that women should not remain in marriages involving physical abuse or causing social misery.
The statement emphasised that sexist and gender-based violent behavior constitutes a criminal offense under law, and media outlets cannot freely promote such views or react with amusement to them.
