The mayor of Polis Chrysochous has written to President Nikos Christodoulides opposing plans for a partial upgrade of the local hospital, arguing it would undermine efforts to secure a new modern facility for the region.
In his letter, Yiotis Papachristofi rejected the president’s recently announced €400,000 upgrade plan, which includes improvements to the radiology department and creation of a short-stay unit by 2026.
“As a municipality, we disagree with the partial upgrade costing nearly half a million euros, as this would overshadow our request for a new modern hospital”, the mayor said.
Papachristofi emphasised that Polis Chrysochous, being a remote area, deserves state support.
He proposed that a new facility could include a rehabilitation unit, noting the area’s favourable climate could attract both Cypriot and European patients, as no such public facility currently exists in Cyprus.
The municipality has offered to help secure land for the new hospital and assist with its planning and implementation if their request is approved.
