Police are pursuing two separate investigations into suspended Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos, taking statements daily from a growing number of witnesses.
Investigators are working in parallel on an ex officio probe into assault allegations involving the mayor’s wife, and on a rape allegation filed by a woman. Both teams are summoning individuals and taking statements in their respective cases.
In the rape case, the individuals being questioned were named both by the complainant and by Paphos businessman Theodoros Aristodemou. The alleged events date to around 2016.
According to Phileleftheros sources, several people have already been questioned — among them individuals the woman had previously confided in.
Questioning continues daily and the total number of witnesses is expected to exceed ten. Nothing has leaked about the content of the statements.
Phileleftheros sources said, however, that one piece of information the woman gave investigators is being closely examined and is considered pivotal to the case.
The picture will only become clear once all statements are in, the evidence assessed, and the mayor himself questioned.
In the case involving the mayor’s wife, the investigation is nearing completion. Material gathered primarily from a hospital and medical staff is expected to be submitted to the Law Office for assessment.
In his only public statement, the suspended mayor welcomed the investigation and reserved his right to speak when it concluded. His wife subsequently wrote to the Chief of Police requesting that it be halted.
The Law Office is being kept informed of developments in both investigations.
