Police investigate serious bullying injury of Larnaca pupil

Police have begun taking statements regarding the serious injury of an eight-year-old pupil at a primary school in Larnaca following a door glass incident.

The incident occurred during break time in the first-floor toilets when the pupil was injured by glass from a broken door under circumstances that remain unclear. The child, who required a blood transfusion, suffered injuries to his hands and was initially taken to Larnaca Hospital with haemorrhaging before being transferred to Nicosia General Hospital.

The pupil underwent lengthy surgery and spent 24 hours in the intensive care unit at Makarios Hospital. The child’s father filed a police complaint on Saturday, challenging the school’s handling of the incident.

According to Philenews, investigators are pursuing two lines of inquiry: why supervising teachers did not notice the pupils, and whether the incident stemmed from children’s play, delinquent behaviour, or bullying, following related claims on social media.

Larnaca Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou said the eight-year-old has been discharged, and authorities have requested the father bring the child to give a recorded statement “so we can understand exactly what happened and how to handle the incident”.

The school administration rejected bullying allegations, telling Larnakaonline that three children evaded supervision and went to the upper floor, which is typically closed off during breaks. They stated that “teachers held the child’s artery and tried with all their might to keep him alive” whilst waiting for an ambulance.

The Ministry of Education has also launched an investigation. Erni Sismani, head of the ministry’s Educational Psychology Service, called it “a very serious incident that is under investigation” and said support would be offered to the school, the pupil’s family, and witnesses if requested.

Video-recorded statements will be taken from at least two additional children, while the injured pupil’s parents and school staff will also be interviewed.
