Police hunt suspect after woman films him starting fire in Kornos

Police are searching for a specific person seen by a member of the public deliberately starting a fire in the Kornos area on Sunday afternoon, Fire General Coordinator and Fire Chief Nikos Longinos, said.

A female driver spotted the person setting fire to grass using a firework, then leaving the scene by car, which she photographed. She then managed to put out the fire herself, using water she had in her car, before it could spread.

Longinos said the photographs the driver took of the suspect’s vehicle were forwarded to police, who are now searching for a specific man in connection with the incident. He said he hoped the person would be arrested so that police could establish why the fire was started.

Longinos made the comments during a visit by a delegation from the Federation of Cypriot American Organisations to Pachna, held to hand over financial assistance for buying protective suits for volunteer firefighters in the fire-hit mountainous areas of Limassol.
