A man reported that unknown assailants opened fire on his moving vehicle last night in the Athalassa area of Nicosia, with police investigating every possibility, including attempted murder.

The complainant, a foreign national of Arab origin, came to police at dawn. He said that while driving through the Athalassa area, having come from the University of Cyprus area on his way to Geri, unknown attackers shot at him in an apparent attempt to kill him.

Police specialists inspected his vehicle and found several bullet holes in it. At first light, a team of investigators from the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID), together with forensic experts from the Forensic Science Service, rushed to the scene and are carrying out examinations.

The complainant pointed out the location where he came under fire, and officers are searching for evidence to support his account.

Police are investigating the case as attempted murder, though all possibilities remain open while examinations are still under way. Police have not yet issued a statement on the incident, pending further clarity.

It also remains unknown whether the attackers opened fire with a pistol or an automatic weapon, though efforts are under way to locate shell casings that might indicate the type of weapon used.
