Nicosia Municipality is deploying drones against mosquito breeding sites. Mayor Charalambos Prountzos said their use will soon extend to the “Kateva” canal in Pallouriotissa and other places where sites have been found.
The drones add to the municipality’s existing programme of spraying and inspections. The move comes a few days after the municipality announced that spraying continues daily, including weekends, with approved products in areas where sites have been found or residents have complained.
Interventions have focused on Egkomi, where they cover the Klimos from the Lakatamia border to Agios Dometios, near the cemetery and the State Fair. They also cover the open canal along Iroon Street.
Checks have also been carried out on the Klimos pedestrian street and around 28th October Avenue. The relevant services also systematically inspect possible breeding sites such as abandoned pools, lift pits, open canals and other places where water may remain.

About 60% of complaints turn out to involve a breeding site, either at the home itself or at a neighbouring property, according to the municipality. For this reason, residents are asked to check their yards and outdoor areas regularly and to remove standing water from containers, plant saucers, watering troughs, gutters, abandoned pools and other places.
