Two types of dangerous mosquitoes that can potentially carry infectious diseases such as yellow fever have recently made their presence in Larnaca and Limassol and people should take the necessary precautions.
This is what Dr Marlen Vasquez, academic staff at the Cyprus University of Technology focusing on environmental chemistry and toxicology with emphasis on xenobiotics and their impacts on biological systems told Active radio station.
Possibly, the risk of transmission in Cyprus is very low, she also said before noting that the specific black and white mosquitoes bite during the day and not in the evening.
“Three factors are necessary for them to have the potential to transmit viruses. Firstly, we must all be aware of the species that made their presence in Cyprus,” she said.
“Secondly, we must be aware that these species have a pathogenic microorganism that is not endemic to our island. And, thirdly, the bite of an infected mosquito,” she added.
She recommended basic preventive measures such as insect repellants and plants that prevent insects from approaching an area.
But she especially called on people to avoid having cat water containers out in the yard and in other hot spots where water is collected.
