Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis is set to meet with officials from the Public Works Department to address the safety concerns surrounding the Limassol intersection, where a New Year’s Eve collision claimed four lives.

According to the Minister, there is a pressing issue concerning the excessive speeds reached by drivers at this particular junction. “Citizens have contacted me and reported that many times drivers run red lights due to excessive speed. Therefore, we need to explore what measures can be taken. It could be the construction of a roundabout or the placement of a platform to reduce the likelihood of excessive speed by drivers,” said the Minister of Transport.

Scheduled for January 15, the meeting with Public Works aims to discuss and propose potential solutions to enhance safety at this critical road intersection. Vafeadis is keen on evaluating options such as constructing a roundabout or installing a platform to mitigate the risks associated with high speeds.

Reflecting on the recent quadruple fatal accident, the minister noted that initial assessments point towards clear negligence on the part of the driver. The police are actively investigating the incident, with strong indications suggesting a violation of the red light and excessive speed.

“On January 15, I will have a meeting with the Public Works to discuss the issue and explore potential solutions to improve the situation at the specific road junction,” confirmed Vafeadis.

Emphasising the broader issue of speeding, the Minister of Transport stressed, “There is a problem with drivers, and we need to see how we can limit it and what measures need to be taken.”

He concluded by highlighting additional concerns related to the use of mobile phones while driving and non-compliance with seat belt regulations. The ministry is gearing up to address these violations and enhance road safety.

The tragic quadruple fatal accident occurred at the traffic-light-controlled intersection of Yiannou Kranidioti and Ayias Anastasias streets in Limassol, half an hour into 2024. Two siblings and their grandparents died after colliding with an incoming pick-up truck while trying to turn right at the intersection.

This incident marks the second fatal road accident recorded at this location within three years.

In 2020, an elderly woman lost her life in a traffic accident when a vehicle driven by her spouse was hit by a vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
