Two Greek Cypriot men, aged 21 and 19, have been detained for five days in connection with a violent racist attack on two foreign food delivery workers in Limassol.
The assault occurred on Saturday night in the Kato Polemidia area, involving a group of approximately 15 individuals who allegedly beat and robbed two delivery workers.
According to police sources, the 21-year-old suspect admitted to punching one of the victims, claiming self-defence, while the 19-year-old denied involvement, stating he attempted to break up the fight.
A witness statement described 15-20 individuals, some with covered faces and armed with wooden sticks, water bombs and rocks, shouting racist abuse at and attacking the two workers. The assailants reportedly continued the assault despite bystanders’ attempts to intervene.
Authorities are in possession of CCTV footage capturing the incident. The suspects face charges including robbery, causing grievous bodily harm, public insult, and offences under Cyprus’s 2021 anti-racism legislation.
The victims, who had 300 euros and a mobile phone stolen, were treated at Limassol Hospital for facial and bodily injuries. One victim suffered a broken nose and was hospitalised as a precaution.
