Police in Larnaca arrested a 34-year-old domestic worker on Saturday morning on suspicion of sending more than 42,000 euros belonging to her 81-year-old employer abroad through money transfer companies.

The case was reported to police on 3 November by a 47-year-old relative of the woman, after suspicious transactions were found on her bank card. The transactions appear to date back to August.

Investigators from the Larnaca CID’s Economic Crime Investigation Office gathered evidence against the domestic worker, and she was arrested on the strength of a court warrant.

Police searched her room and seized three mobile phones, 620 euros in cash and gold jewellery worth a total of 1,600 euros, which they said had been bought with the 81-year-old’s bank card.

The suspect is due to appear before Larnaca District Court on Sunday morning, where police will seek a remand order.

The investigation is continuing.
