Three to face court over Deryneia kangaroo killing case

Three individuals face charges in Cyprus after a kangaroo was killed and dismembered in a Deryneia apartment building car park, with the main suspect claiming the animal died fighting another kangaroo.

The case will be filed tomorrow at Famagusta District Court in Paralimni against three defendants, including a 36-year-old man currently in custody. Two additional individuals connected to a Paralimni farm where the animal was collected alive are also charged with animal welfare violations.

A post-mortem examination revealed the animal died from slaughter, contradicting the primary suspect’s claim that it died after fighting another kangaroo. The investigation revealed plastic bags containing dismembered kangaroo parts, an axe and five knives at the scene.

Police are still searching for another man who was with the 36-year-old at the apartment car park, as well as the driver of a pickup truck who allegedly helped transport the animal from the Paralimni farm.

The case came to light on 6 May when police received reports of two men dismembering an animal in an apartment building car park. The 36-year-old was arrested at the scene while his accomplice escaped. When taken to Deryneia Police Station, authorities discovered the suspect had been living illegally in Cyprus since 2022.

The main suspect faces charges including causing animal pain, suffering, injury or fear, subjecting an animal to a horrible death, possession of a prohibited animal and illegal residence in the Republic.
