A fraudster was caught on video attempting to deceive an elderly woman in Larnaca using an elaborate ruse involving her son, prompting a police investigation after the incident was reported and footage posted online.
The case has been reported to Larnaca CID, which is searching for the perpetrator who tried to obtain money from the woman by claiming to be associated with her son.
The incident occurred in the Prodromos area of Larnaca. Video footage shows a man wearing a cap knocking on the woman’s door and introducing himself as Giorgos Papadopoulos, speaking with a Greek accent.
The fraudster then used a ploy to convince the woman to reveal her son’s name, after which he claimed to be friends with him. Stating that he had brought some documents related to her son’s car, he pretended to telephone the son and gained entry to the woman’s home.
Once inside, the man asked the woman whether she had money to give him on behalf of her son. He initially requested €350, then reduced the amount to €250 and subsequently to €200.
The elderly woman stated she had no money at home and told him that her son had not asked her to give money to anyone. When the unknown man realised he would not obtain any money, he left the house empty-handed.
The elderly woman’s family reported the case yesterday evening and police began searching for the perpetrator, who faces investigation for attempted fraud by false representation.
According to information obtained by philenews, no other similar complaints have been made to Larnaca CID thus far.
