AHEPA University Hospital Cyprus is set to become the first accredited academic hospital on the island.
The hospital, boasting approximately 200 beds, 100 examination rooms, state-of-the-art facilities in various medical specialities and subspecialties, specialized laboratories (endoscopy, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, urology, cardiology, etc.), an Accident and Emergency Department, a rehabilitation department, a full clinical and radiology department, and 10 operating rooms, is set to join the General Healthcare System (GESY).
The establishment and operation of this new hospital were announced yesterday, with the presence of the first Cypriot president of the global fraternity AHEPA, Savvas Tsivicos.
Tsivicos stated, “It will be Cyprus’ first fully accredited hospital and will implement the strictest protocols and a documented operating system, ensuring the highest level of services and the capability to conduct clinical research.”
The announcement was made by ‘Vivant Medical Investments PLC’ during a press conference held at the IMC Building, which will house the hospital.
The building, covering an area of 18,000 square meters, was designed by the renowned architect and urban planner, Lord Cunliff, and was constructed to meet public building specifications by J&P.
It has been recognized by world-renowned experts as the ideal facility in the most suitable geographical location to house Cyprus’ first university hospital.
One of the innovations of the new university will be its digital infrastructure, making it a digitally smart hospital equipped with databases and equipment to support research programs and epidemiological studies.
“The entire investment, including the conversion of the building into a hospital with state-of-the-art technological infrastructure and the most modern medical equipment, amounts to €80 million,” stated Tsivicos.
Dr. Ioannis Patrikios, a member of the Board of Directors and Deputy Dean of the Medical School at the European University Cyprus, provided a detailed description of the advantages of the new university hospital.
He also mentioned the significant potential for a partnership agreement with the Medical School of the European University Cyprus for the practical training of students from medical, nursing, physiotherapy, and technical medical disciplines.
Francine Westergaard, Principal Accreditation Consultant of the largest certification organization, ‘The Joint Commission International’, which serves as the project’s advisor in all stages from initial planning to operation and certification, explained the importance and benefits of an accredited hospital.
Following this, Dr. Alfred Barich, a member of the Board of Directors of AHEPA University Hospital Thessaloniki, elaborated on the advantages, synergies, and prospects of a multi-level collaboration between the two university hospitals in Cyprus and Thessaloniki.
He stated, “The interconnection and multi-level collaboration with AHEPA University Hospital Thessaloniki, combined with modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, overseen by distinguished professors and staffed with internationally renowned doctors and scientific personnel, will provide the necessary infrastructure and conditions for the medical schools of our universities, ensuring that their practical training environment is on par with the major university hospitals in Europe.”
