Firefighters brought the fire that triggered a large-scale response on Wednesday afternoon under control at 5.30pm. The forest fire broke out within the bed of the Tremithos river, inside the administrative boundaries of the Agia Anna community in Larnaca.
The Forest Department said the fire burned an area of around six hectares, made up of reeds, wild grass and cane stubble.
Five firefighting aircraft took part in the operation, along with 33 Forest Department personnel using six fire engines, two water tankers and a bulldozer, and nine Fire Service personnel with three fire engines. A water tanker and a bulldozer from the Larnaca District Administration also took part, along with local residents using an agricultural tractor and an excavator.
Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis said the fire broke out in the Kalo Chorio area of Larnaca, which falls under the Forest Department’s operational responsibility.
The Forest Department said the fire is not linked to the Kalo Chorio firing range.
