Family alleges inadequate care of infant at Paphos hospital

A family in Paphos has filed formal complaints and is considering legal action against those responsible after claiming their one-year-old infant received inadequate treatment at Paphos Hospital.

The mother told philenews that they were forced to transfer their child to Limassol Hospital, where the infant required a four-day hospitalisation.

According to the mother, the incident occurred in the early hours of October 19, when she took her child, who was ill with RSV virus, to Paphos Hospital‘s Emergency Department due to breathing difficulties.

The mother claims that whilst the emergency department doctor examined the infant, the on-call paediatrician prescribed antibiotics and sent the child home without conducting an examination, citing a lack of available beds for admission.

The family says they travelled to Limassol General Hospital two hours later, where the infant was diagnosed with pneumonia and hospitalised for four days.

The mother also alleges this was not their first concerning experience at Paphos Hospital.

She reports that when the infant was five days old, they visited the hospital due to jaundice and did not receive proper care from staff.

The family and their private paediatrician reported that incident to SHSO (State Health Services Organisation), who has yet to respond to either complaint despite promises to investigate.

The family is now considering legal action against all parties responsible following this latest incident.
