An 18-year-old Swedish tourist has been remanded for three days by Famagusta District Court after police found counterfeit €50 notes in his possession and later in his hotel room in Ayia Napa, where he was on a short family holiday.

Police are investigating whether he brought the counterfeit notes with him from Sweden. He has so far refused to cooperate with investigators.

He was arrested on Monday after members of the Famagusta Crime Combating Unit, while assessing intelligence at a business premises, received two €50 notes from an employee there, both bearing the same serial number.

Examination of the notes produced evidence against the 18-year-old, who was subsequently traced by police. A body search found two more €50 notes in his possession, also bearing the same serial number, and he was arrested for a flagrant offence.

A search of his hotel room turned up a further 19 €50 notes bearing the same serial number, which were seized along with the earlier notes.

Famagusta CID is continuing its investigation.
