People in Cyprus face scorching temperatures tonight and tomorrow, with highs expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius on Friday, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The Department issued a double warning: a Yellow Warning for extreme temperatures from 9:00 pm tonight until 6:00 am tomorrow, followed by an Orange Warning in effect from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Department of Forests has raised the forest fire alert to “red alert” level for Friday, June 14, 2024, citing the extreme weather conditions.
Officials emphasised the illegality of lighting fires without a permit, with potential penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment or a €50,000 fine.
Permitted cooking fires are only allowed in designated barbecue areas at picnic sites.
Authorities urged the public to exercise extreme caution during outings and avoid activities that could spark fires, including using tools or machinery that generate heat, sparks, or flames.
The Department of Forests and Fire Service urged anyone who spots smoke or fire to call 1407 or 112 immediately.
