The Department of Meteorology is poised to issue a red warning for exceptionally high temperatures on Friday, with inland areas forecast to hit a scorching 45 degrees Celsius, meteorologist Tasos Koulentis said on state radio.
Koulentis said additional warnings for coastal and mountainous regions would depend on final temperature readings.
Yellow warnings, the second-highest level, are triggered by coastal readings of 37 degrees Celsius in the west and 39 degrees Celsius in the southeast and north.
He offered some respite for the weekend, predicting an influx of westerly air currents that would bring temperatures down to a more manageable 37-38 degrees Celsius.
However, Koulentis cautioned that the region’s moderate to strong winds could also contribute to the spread of wildfires.
