A dead male beaked whale, measuring approximately five metres in length, washed ashore on Tuesday afternoon in the coastal area of occupied Akanthou.
According to Turkish Cypriot media, the mammal, estimated to weigh around 1.5 tonnes, was found on a rocky shoreline. Teams from the wildlife rehabilitation centre, based in occupied Vouno, were mobilised to remove and transport the animal.
The director of the centre, Kemal Basat, said the incident occurred around the same period as a similar stranding three years ago, when 13 beaked whales washed ashore.
Efforts to move the whale from the inaccessible location were ongoing, reports said. The animal is expected to be transferred to the centre’s facilities, where a necropsy will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
