Investigators hunt motive, masterminds in dark web murder plot in Cyprus

Relevant News

Police are working with Europol and authorities in several European countries to establish the motive behind a foiled plot to murder twins who were due to holiday in Cyprus, and to identify the masterminds who ordered it, as the investigation by the Special Investigative Team of Police Headquarters — known informally as “Cyprus’s FBI” — continues.

Two Norwegian nationals and one Irish national were arrested in Cyprus after travelling to meet an alleged assassin they had found on the dark web, who was in fact an undercover police officer sent from Denmark.

The three suspects, held for eight days, have so far refused to speak, though they are believed to be members of a criminal group rather than the masterminds behind the plot.

The intended targets — both British nationals with criminal records — remain untraced; Europol has been notified and is working to locate them.

According to information gathered so far, the pair had been holidaying in the government-controlled area of Famagusta a few weeks earlier and appeared to be planning to return to Cyprus.

The criminal group had offered the “hitman” around €85,000, equivalent to 650,000 Danish kroner, for the killing, the Famagusta District Court heard last Saturday.

Police are continuing to examine the suspects’ phones and are seeking CCTV footage in Ayia Napa and Larnaca, where the suspects had been staying.
