New regulations for traffic camera violations come into effect today, March 6, introducing a tiered system for fines related to red light and stop-line offences.
The Police announced that the changes, approved by the Cabinet and published in the Official Gazette, apply only to new violations and are not retroactive. Under Law 91(I)/2024, the fixed penalty system has been replaced with graduated fines based on the severity of the infringement.
For motorists who fail to stop behind the mandatory white line but do not enter the intersection, the out-of-court fine is now set at €25.
However, penalties for running a red light remain significantly higher and include penalty points. The new breakdown is as follows:
- Entering a pedestrian crossing: If a vehicle enters the designated pedestrian crossing area while the light is red, the fine is €85 plus three penalty points.
- Crossing beyond the pedestrian zone: If a vehicle passes entirely through the pedestrian crossing and enters the junction, the fine rises to €300 plus three penalty points.
- Intersections without crossings: At junctions where no pedestrian crossing exists, any vehicle crossing the white stop line and entering the intersection faces a €300 fine and three penalty points.
Police also informed the public that all enquiries regarding the traffic camera system—including payment issues, driver identification, or potential offences—should be directed to the private contractor.
Citizens can contact the company via the toll-free number 80008009 (or +357 22712609 from abroad), by post at P.O. Box 17031, 2260 Latsia – Nicosia, or through the official website at www.CyCameraSystem.com.
