Cyprus to implement mobile phone ban in secondary schools

Education Minister Athena Michaelidou announced on the ‘Alpha Kalimera’ show that decisions on implementing a mobile phone ban in Secondary and High Schools are imminent.

The Minister cited recommendations from the European Union and UNESCO as the basis for the ban, aiming to curb youth delinquency.

“The value of technology and educational applications on mobile phones is recognised,” Michaelidou said. “For this reason, a more nuanced approach for High Schools is under discussion.”

A ban on mobile phones in Primary Schools is already in place. The Ministry plans to extend the ban to Secondary Schools and implement a differentiated policy for High Schools.

“We expect a decision within days,” Michaelidou stated. “Our proposal will be presented to Parliament, and we have broad stakeholder consensus – parents and teachers are supportive.”

The Minister mentioned existing practices in some Technical Schools, where students use lockers to store phones during lessons. “This model is under consideration for older students,” she concluded.
