Cyprus faces its first 40-degree temperatures of the year during the Pentecost weekend, with the Department of Meteorology warning of significantly above-average heat and heightened fire risks.
Temperatures will reach 38-39°C from 7-9 June, with the first reading of 40°C possible on Monday, meteorological officer Michalis Mouskos told Philenews. The mercury will climb well above normal seasonal averages as weather instability subsides.
“We will certainly have summer weather, noticeably above normal levels for the season and considerably higher than what we have been accustomed to so far,” Mouskos said.
The officer warned of dry conditions requiring increased vigilance regarding fire risks. Weather patterns will display fully summer characteristics during the three-day period.
Current conditions and outlook
Weak low pressure currently affects the region. This afternoon will bring locally increased cloud cover, potentially producing isolated showers or thunderstorms, primarily in mountainous and inland areas.
Winds will blow mainly southwest to northwest, light to moderate at 3-4 Beaufort scale, locally reaching strong 4-5 Beaufort in windward areas. Sea conditions will remain up to slightly rough.
Tonight’s weather will be mainly clear despite intermittent increased low cloud cover. Southwest to northwest winds, locally northeast, will be light at 3 Beaufort. Sea conditions will be calm to slightly rough. Overnight temperatures will drop to 17°C inland, around 18°C coastal areas, and 12°C in higher mountains.
