Cyprus’s primary school teachers’ union has demanded immediate consultation on plans to abolish the current teacher placement system, adding to growing tensions over widespread education reforms.

The education ministry has committed to implementing three major reforms in 2025, including a new teacher appointment system, amid controversy over the planned abolition of the current appointments list in 2027.

The Pancyprian Council of General Representatives (PSGA) of the primary teachers’ union POED unanimously opposed the ministry’s plans, warning against potential adverse effects on teachers both on the current placements list and the eligibility roster.

Education Minister Athena Michaelidou’s recent public statements about abolishing the list have sparked strong opposition from the union, which is demanding an immediate official proposal that incorporates their views.

The union has called for the preservation of the appointments list beyond 2027 and correction of what it terms “distortions” in the new appointment system.

The education ministry is awaiting legal advice from the Law Office regarding implications of abolishing the appointments list in 2027.

The appointments system reform is part of broader changes planned for 2025, including teacher evaluation and legislation for special and inclusive education.
