The education minister Athena Michaelidou has indicated there will be no further written responses to OELMEK’s demands ahead of the teachers’ union’s January 10 strike deadline.

Speaking today, Michaelidou said the ministry had already addressed OELMEK’s concerns, particularly regarding the contentious teacher evaluation scheme that sparked the current crisis.

“We do not blackmail and we will not be blackmailed”, the minister stated, adding that the ministry would continue to hold meetings with stakeholders.

The union’s intention to escalate the matter to President Nikos Christodoulides was addressed by government spokesman Letymbiotis, who affirmed that the issue remains under the education minister’s purview.

The presidential palace appears to be backing Michaelidou’s handling of the situation, showing no immediate intention to intervene.

OELMEK president Demetris Taliadoros has maintained the union’s position, rejecting suggestions of blackmail.

“We are not blackmailing anyone; we want to protect public education and public schools”, he said. The union is standing firm on both its deadline and its approach to the dispute.
