Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis said Thursday that Cypriot authorities are continuously evaluating counter-terrorism measures following threats from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Hartsiotis’ comments came a day after Nasrallah said in a televised address that Cyprus could become “part of the war” and a target if it continued offering its airports and bases to Israel for military purposes.
Israel and Cyprus have a bilateral defence cooperation agreement and regularly conduct joint exercises.
“With regard to my ministry’s remit, I have repeatedly stated that measures against terrorism are under constant evaluation and update,” Hartsiotis said. “Therefore, it is self-evident that these statements are also being assessed, and relevant measures are adjusted daily based on information, developments, and public pronouncements by various actors.”
The Minister also reiterated that counter-terrorism measures are undergoing continuous assessment and stressed that all necessary protective actions are being taken in response to the situation.
Nasrallah’s statements came a day after Israeli generals said they had signed off on planning for a wider offensive against Hezbollah.
