Cyprus vehicle owners have until midnight on Wednesday to renew their road tax free of charge, the Road Transport Department (RTD) warned on Monday, with nearly 677,000 vehicles already registered for 2026.
Some 677,133 vehicles had been renewed as of 8 March, slightly fewer than the 680,670 renewed by the same date last year, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works said.
Owners who miss the 11 March deadline will face a surcharge of €10 plus ten per cent of the applicable annual road tax fee. Renewals have been accepted since 7 January and are available for periods of three, six, nine or twelve months.
The department urged owners not to leave renewal to the last minute to avoid potential system overload. A valid roadworthiness certificate and insurance are required to complete the process.
Renewals can be made online throughout the year at the RTD website (rtd.mcw.gov.cy), with the exception of vehicles belonging to embassies, the United Nations, quarries, large families’ private buses, classic vehicles holding a special licence, and certain other organisations.
Owners who do not intend to renew their 2026 licence must file a vehicle immobilisation notice with the RTD — also available online — or they will remain liable for road tax payments. Vehicles whose 2025 licence was not renewed and have not been declared immobilised will be struck from the RTD register if outstanding fees are not settled and the 2026 licence renewed by midnight on Wednesday.
Owners of scrapped vehicles must submit a cancellation of registration form (RTD 98A) along with a destruction certificate issued by a licensed vehicle waste processing facility in order to be exempt from road tax from the date of destruction.
The department noted that no renewal reminder notices have been sent to vehicle owners, and urged owners to keep their contact details updated on the RTD register.
