Firefighters tackled three separate blazes across the Nicosia district on Saturday, according to Fire Service spokesman Andreas Kettis.

The first fire broke out in the occupied area of Gerolakkos, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the air that could be seen from several parts of Nicosia.

The Fire Service also rushed to a blaze burning through dry grass, wild vegetation, and stubble near Meniko village.

Five fully staffed fire engines deployed from Nicosia to fight the flames, alongside two Forestry Department vehicles and a Civil Defence portable firefighting unit. The volunteer groups Atlas, Dias, and SupportCY also joined the operation, while two firefighting aircraft already out on patrol carried out water drops. Crews brought the fire under control after it burned one hectare, and teams remain on site to douse the remaining embers and secure the perimeter.
