A television set was likely responsible for a fatal house fire that killed a family of five in Limassol last Saturday, according to a report by the island’s Electromechanical Services Department (ESD).
The investigation found visible damage to the TV’s metal back panel, which was plugged into a power strip along with other appliances including a water cooler, the department said in its preliminary findings.
While investigators focus on the television as the probable cause, they continue to examine other electrical devices.
A heater of the same model used by the family is scheduled for testing today to verify compliance with Cyprus market regulations.
The fire broke out early Saturday morning in a second-floor apartment in Agios Nikolaos. Officials said the heater may be sent abroad for specialised testing as the investigation continues.
