Cyprus climbs to 20th place in EU gender equality index

Cyprus has moved up one spot to 20th place among 27 EU member states in the European Institute for Gender Equality’s (EIGE) 2024 Gender Equality Index, released today in Brussels.

The report shows Cyprus made the most significant progress in employment conditions and access to financial resources, according to Gender Equality Commissioner Josie Christodoulou.

However, the country scored lowest in power-sharing, which measures gender balance in political, economic and social decision-making.

While women’s representation in the Council of Ministers reached its highest level, female participation remains notably low in parliament, local government, and boards of major listed companies, public broadcasting, and sports organisations.

The improvement aligns with other international assessments, including the World Economic Forum’s report which raised Cyprus to 86th from 106th place globally, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals ranking where Cyprus places 39th among 139 countries.

“While this overall progress marks an important step for our country, there is no room for complacency”, Christodoulou said.

She added that the government continues to implement its National Strategy for Gender Equality in collaboration with ministries, social partners, and civil society organisations.
