Cyprus buys new facial recognition tech to curb stadium violence

Relevant News

Cyprus is set to deploy advanced facial recognition technology to crack down on disturbances at sports stadiums.

The new software, capable of identifying individuals even when partially obscured, is expected to be operational by Christmas.

According to the Chairman of the Stadium Licensing Authority, Giorgos Karas, the system can recognise up to 80 points on a person’s face and match it against a central database within minutes. This rapid identification process aims to allow for swift arrests.

Karas said that the new technology will allow police to arrest people even before they leave the stadium, as it will be able to recognise faces between three to five minutes.

Currently, Karas noted, face recognitions in Cypriot stadiums take three to five days to match a person to a face.

The technology will be combined with a modernised fan card system.

Stadium security officers will be responsible for operating the software and coordinating with police.

Karas expressed confidence that the new measures will significantly improve stadium safety and reduce incidents of violence.
