A bus driver in Limassol was injured when two men riding a motorcycle threw a firecracker at his vehicle on Thursday.
Marios Zinonos was driving route 30 eastbound near Poseidonia Hotel when the incident occurred, leaving him with eye pressure injuries and hearing issues, according to his account provided to philenews.
“At that moment, I thought I had lost my eye,” Zinonos said, describing how he bent over the steering wheel in pain while passengers called for an ambulance and police assistance.
Doctors have assured Zinonos that his eye suffered no permanent damage, though he experienced significant pressure. He has scheduled appointments with doctors regarding his hearing, as his ears continue to ring following the explosion. The pressure from the blast also caused a minor crack in his nose.
The incident appears to be part of a pattern of escalating violence against bus drivers in the area.
“Initially they threw eggs at us, then stones that broke the windows, and now they’ve started with firecrackers,” Zinonos said.
Closed-circuit television cameras recorded the motorcycle, and Zinonos believes the perpetrators are the same individuals who attacked two of his colleagues in a similar manner the previous day.
“It’s the same motorcycle, with the same description. After the attack, after traveling a short distance, it turned around and moved towards the opposite traffic lane,” he concluded.
