Cyprus is experiencing unusually warm weather for the season, as a hot air mass is pushing temperatures more than 10 degrees Celsius above normal, before a dramatic shift to winter conditions is expected by midweek, Kitasweather reports.
Temperatures today will reach 28-31°C in inland areas, 24-26°C along eastern coastal regions, 27-30°C in other coastal areas and 17°C in the Troodos mountains.
The fine and warm weather is expected to continue throughout the weekend.
Saturday will see temperatures rise further to 8-13 degrees above seasonal norms, reaching 29-32°C inland, 27-31°C in coastal areas, and 19°C at Chionistra. Dust will be in the atmosphere.
Similar conditions will persist on Sunday with mostly clear skies and occasional thin high cloud. Temperature deviations will remain 8-13 degrees above the average for the season.
Weather set to shift
However, the weather is set to change Monday, Kitasweather reports, as the high-pressure system retreats and cooler air masses over northeastern Europe begin moving southward.
Weather conditions will become partly to mostly cloudy with high and medium cloud formations, while temperatures will drop slightly but remain 6-11 degrees above seasonal averages.
A significant shift is expected from Tuesday as an “Omega Block” weather pattern forms, according to Kitasweather, causing the trough to detach and follow a southerly path toward the region. This development will bring a sharp temperature drop by midweek, transitioning from late spring-like warmth to winter conditions.
This cooling will be accompanied by rainfall and snow, though precise precipitation amounts will become clearer in coming days. Night frost is anticipated in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, potentially becoming severe at higher elevations.
What is an Omega Block
An Omega block is a persistent weather pattern characterised by a large, stationary high-pressure system flanked by two low-pressure systems, forming a shape resembling the Greek letter Omega (Ω) when viewed on weather maps.

This phenomenon creates a significant disruption in the normal west-to-east flow of weather systems across regions.
Key characteristics of an Omega block include:
- Prolonged stability: These systems typically remain in place for several days to weeks, causing extended periods of consistent weather conditions in affected areas.
- Temperature extremes: Areas under the central high-pressure ridge often experience abnormally warm conditions, while regions affected by the adjacent low-pressure systems may see unusually cool temperatures.
- Weather pattern interruption: The blocking nature prevents the usual progression of weather systems, often leading to dramatic shifts when the block eventually breaks down.
In Cyprus’s case, the developing Omega block will redirect a cold trough southward toward the island, explaining the forecast’s prediction of a rapid transition from current summer-like temperatures exceeding 30°C to winter conditions.
