The situation in the wider Agia Marinouda area has become dramatic due to continuous fires at illegal dumping sites, Community Leader Charalambos Savva has warned, calling for immediate intervention by the competent authorities.
The latest fire that started from the landfill site highlighted once again the dangerous nature of the situation, Savva said.
He noted that the area has filled with uncontrolled dumping sites between Konies, Marathounta and Agia Varvara, where old furniture, rubbish, electrical appliances, wood and rubble are discarded.
Following the fire, some of these sites were cleaned by municipal crews; however, the problem remains, according to Savva.
The community leader emphasised that communities around the landfill and the former aggregate materials site in Marathounta face immediate danger.
He alleged that no restoration measures were taken for the former site, despite repeated representations by the Community Authority.
“The competent authorities showed no interest,” Savva noted, stressing that an environmental restoration study is required as the fire threat has become daily.
He said communities surrounding the landfill and the former Marathounta aggregate site are at immediate risk from the uncontrolled waste disposal areas.
