Civil Defence has issued safety guidelines following a Meteorological Department warning about isolated severe storms expected to affect Cyprus on Sunday.
Here are the key recommendations:
Before flooding
- Ensure drains around homes and workplaces are clear
- Check gutters are functioning properly
- Install sump pumps in vulnerable basements
- Secure items that could be swept away
- Prepare sandbags if in flood-risk areas
- Limit travel during heavy rainfall
During flooding
- Evacuate basement areas immediately
- Avoid crossing flooded roads by foot or vehicle
- Abandon stalled vehicles
- Stay away from power lines and landslide-prone areas
After flooding
- Avoid flooded areas as familiar landmarks may have changed
- Stay clear of contaminated floodwater
- Don’t obstruct rescue operations
- Wait for official clearance before returning
- Turn off electricity and water supplies
- Wear appropriate protective clothing
If indoors
- Secure outdoor objects
- Close doors and windows but keep internal glass shutters open
- Stay away from windows and loose items
If outdoors
- Monitor tornado path and evacuate if possible
- If trapped, lie face down in a depression, protecting head with hands
- Stay clear of objects that could become airborne
The Civil Defence emphasises that flood risks don’t immediately subside when waters recede and urges residents to follow official guidance for recovery operations.
