The Deputy Ministry of Shipping has begun the immediate removal of pollutants, debris and both wrecks that sank on Saturday at Cape Greco, and has issued a NAVTEX notice through the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) for the safety of navigation.
In a statement on the sinking of the boats “Perla Bianca” and “Petsas I” on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in the bay between Agioi Anargyroi and Konnos at Cape Greco, the ministry said it noted with sorrow the tragic death of Dimis Mavropoulos, the owner and operator of the “Perla Bianca,” and expressed its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
It said it is working with other competent authorities of the Republic to advance the immediate removal of all types of pollutants, debris, and both wrecks from the sea.
On maritime navigation safety specifically, it said the JRCC had also issued a relevant NAVTEX notice to mariners.
These actions, it said, are considered necessary to protect the marine environment from pollution, and to safeguard the safety of human life at sea and navigation safety in the area.
The safety investigation into the sinking of the “Perla Bianca” is being carried out by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping in cooperation with the police.
The investigation into the sinking of the passenger ferry “Petsas I” will be carried out by the Cyprus Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB), the authority responsible under the law on the investigation of marine accidents and incidents.
