Choice of parents’ names on new IDs expected by November

People should be able to choose whether their parents’ names appear on their new biometric identity cards by the end of November, the Interior Ministry said, following objections to the names being left off.

Those who have already been issued a new card without their parents’ names and want them added will be able to have it replaced free of charge once the change is in place, by taking it to a Citizen Service Centre, a Citizen Centre or a District Administration.

The contractor that issues the cards informed the Interior Minister in mid-September that it had started adjusting the system, the ministry said. According to the company, the work is expected to be completed within two months, by the end of November at the latest.

The ministry said the change followed decisions on the new identity cards announced on 31 July 2026 and took into account objections and reservations from some members of the public, as well as the positions of political parties on leaving the parents’ names off. Its Civil Registry Directorate is in constant contact with the contractor over the technical adjustment, it said.

The ministry said it would issue an update with full details of the replacement procedure as soon as the adjustment is complete.
