Authorities fear escalating violence after mafia-style hit in Limassol

Limassol Police finds itself in the midst of escalating concern following the gangland-style execution of 55-year-old Thanasis Kalogeropoulos yesterday morning. Authorities are attributing the murder to organised crime, and say they fear an impending cycle of violence.

Investigations into the motive behind the contract killing point towards unresolved conflicts and financial entanglements the victim had. Furthermore, scrutiny intensifies regarding the professional dealings of the deceased, with investigators linking the murder to settling scores. The head of Limassol CID, Lefteris Kyriacou, described the operation as “meticulously planned and flawlessly executed”.

The victim, Thanasis Kalogeropoulos, allegedly had been involved in multiple disputes and was due to testify regarding two other unresolved murders from the past decade. The precision and severity of the attack suggest a contract killing, as evidenced by the barrage of gunfire at close range. Although the exact count of bullets remains undisclosed, the victim sustained multiple wounds, including head injuries and various parts of the body. Forensic pathologists are expected to provide further details during the autopsy on the 55-year-old’s body today.

In a bid to unravel the motive behind the murder, investigators have opened old case files, unearthing various details about Kalogeropoulos. Friends and family have been summoned for testimonies, indicating that some had cautioned the victim about potential dangers.

Authorities are intensifying their efforts in the next 24 hours, focusing on surveillance footage from the victim’s departure from his residence in Parekklisia to his interactions and whereabouts prior to the murder. Simultaneously, investigations will also cover the routes taken by the suspects before and after the crime, as well as the location where the vehicle used in the murder was discovered.

Additional revelations suggest that the vehicle used by the perpetrators was reported stolen earlier in the month, while the license plates also belonged to another vehicle of the same make and model. These plates, identified as foreign, have been associated with an absent owner residing outside Cyprus for several months.

The details of the murder paint a chilling scene, where the victim, a father of three young girls, made his usual rounds, dropping off his children at school before heading to his regular spot for a morning swim. Yesterday, before he could exit his vehicle, a conversation with a friend in the parking area turned fatal. The assailants, lying in wait, unleashed a series of shots, ending Kalogeropoulos’s life on the spot, and leaving the vehicle to collide with a barrier in the parking lot.
