Today in the Germasogeia area of Limassol, a morning at the beach turned into a scene of terror as 55-year-old Thanasis Kalogeropoulos fell victim to an assassination in broad daylight.
Kalogeropoulos, caught in a deadly ambush set by two hitmen, succumbed to a barrage of bullets within his car.
Bystanders said that he was murdered while trying to park his car. They reported seeing another vehicle stopping next to the man’s car and two men in hoods exiting it before opening fire at the victim.
An eyewitness present during the attack shared a chilling account of the gangland-style execution. According to the witness, one of the assailants fired a series of shots at Kalogeropoulos from a distance of approximately two meters.
“At first, I heard the gunshots but assumed they were fireworks. I went to get something from the promenade, and then I heard gunfire again,” the eyewitness recounted.
“I saw someone running next to the victim’s vehicle, about two meters away, holding a large black gun and firing. He shot at close range. Everything happened within a few seconds. I saw that he was wearing something on his head, his face was covered.”
The incident prompted a rush among beachgoers to seek refuge, fearing for their own safety.
“It appears they first shot at the car in which the victim was. He moved a few meters, hit the wall, and the other cut him off there and began shooting at him from a distance of two meters,” the witness described.
According to authorities, the suspects then fled the scene and drove to Ayia Fyla, where they torched their vehicle and weapons – a pistol and an automatic rifle – in an empty field.
Police are investigating the case.
