Former President Donald Trump has secured a surprising victory in Dearborn, Michigan’s largest Arab American-majority city, marking a shift from 2020 when Joe Biden won the city by a large margin.
According to the New Republic, with votes counted as of 11:35 p.m. EST, Trump garnered 46.8 per cent of the vote, whilst Vice President Kamala Harris received 27.8 per cent and Green Party candidate Jill Stein secured 22 per cent. The result represents a significant reversal from 2020, when Biden won 74.2 per cent of the vote to Trump’s 24.2 per cent.
The shift comes amid criticism of the Biden administration’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict. The Harris campaign faced backlash for excluding Muslim and Arab speakers from the Democratic National Convention in August, whilst former President Bill Clinton’s recent visit to Michigan sparked controversy over comments suggesting Israel was “forced” to cause civilian casualties in Gaza.
Stein, who campaigned in Dearborn in September calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, made notable gains in the city.
Across Michigan, Harris trails Trump with 45.9 per cent (1,408,266 votes) to his 52.3 per cent (1,604,225 votes), according to Associated Press data.
